BIO BUDDIES 
 
When creating a bioactive setup, it is of the highest importance to incorporate mesofauna that helps eliminate mold, breaks down waste, and aids in the recycling of nutrients. In accomplishing this goal, there is a duo that is unbeaten: springtails and isopods. 
Isopods are great shredders of large, course material and are vital to breaking down larger detritus. Springtails are the perfect complimentary partner by being excellent at shredding fine, smaller material, and even more importantly, they also eat mold. Together, these two make a fantastic team, and so here at the OIF, we felt it just made sense to offer them as a package deal. There are additinal options for those who wish to create a more complex mix of bioactive inverts as well such as fungus gnat predators, moss mites, micro millipedes, and more.
 
Below are short descriptions of our selection of “teams” of bioactive buddies from "basic," "advanced," and "deluxe" which are ideal for tanks ranging from tropical to temperate in terms of temperature and humidity. The inoculated substrate is what contains the beneficial bacterium, fungi, and other microorganisms that help make your setup bioactive.
