ORIBATID MITES [moss mites]
(Oribatida sp)
Oribatid mites mostly feed on fungi, bacteria and decomposing plant matter, thereby playing an important role in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and the formation and maintenance of soil structure. In fact, researchers frequently use the number of oribatid mites present in soil samples to determine the health of the soil.
These amazing mites play a very important role in the terrarium where they assist in breaking down organic matter, which makes it bio-available to your plants. A bonus feature is their presence in your soil food web serves as competition for pest species, making them less likely to establish. Oribatid mites will even clean up waste matter that could otherwise harbor fungal or bacterial pathogens in your substrate.

Welcome to the OIF shop page for everyone's favourite land crustaceans - ISOPODS!
Formally they had just been lumped in with all our other bioactive fauna. Not surprising since these critters make an excellent component of a bioactive tank.
However, with 2024 being YEAR OF THE ISOPOD, the number of species we maintain and offer has grown immensely, so a separate section in the shop only made sense given this expansion.
