Western Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus hesperus)
 
Gorgeous spiders: females are glossy black with the bright red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen. The much smaller male is more drab in colouration.
 
While research has found the venom of this species to not be as deadly as once believed the bite is very painful and also causes nausea and dizziness. If bitten medical treatment should be sought immediately.
